भीष्म उवाच तत्त्वं शृणुष्व माद्रेय यदेतत्‌ परिपृच्छसि । प्रबोधितो5स्मि भवता धातुमानिव पर्वत:,भीष्मजीने कहा--माद्रीनन्दन! तुम जो यह प्रश्न कर रहे हो, इसका तत्त्व सुनो। मैं तो खूनसे लथपथ हो गेरूधातुसे रँँगे हुए पर्वतके समान पड़ा हुआ था। तुमने यह प्रश्न करके मुझे जगा दिया

bhīṣma uvāca tattvaṃ śṛṇuṣva mādreya yad etat paripṛcchasi | prabodhito 'smi bhavatā dhātumān iva parvataḥ ||

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഹേ മാദ്രേയ! നീ ചോദിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ തത്ത്വം കേൾക്കുക. ഞാൻ രക്തത്തിൽ കുതിർന്ന, ഗേരുധാതുവാൽ ചായം പിടിച്ച പർവ്വതംപോലെ നിശ്ചലമായി കിടന്നിരുന്നു; എന്നാൽ നിന്റെ ചോദ്യം എന്നെ ഉണർത്തി.
