unmātham apy athādāya cāṇḍālo vīkṣya sarvaśaḥ
ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ചാണ്ഡാലൻ ആ ഉപകരണവും എടുത്ത് എല്ലാദിക്കിലും മറിച്ചുമറിച്ച് പരിശോധിച്ചു. അതിൽ ലാഭമോ പ്രതീക്ഷയോ ഒന്നും കാണാതെ, ഒരു നിമിഷത്തിനകം ആ സ്ഥലം വിട്ടു; ഒടുവിൽ തന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങി—അർഹതയില്ലാത്തിടത്ത് നേട്ടം തേടുന്ന ആഗ്രഹം അവസാനം നിരാശയായി തകർന്നുവീഴുന്നതിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തം ഇതാണ്।
