Āpad-dharma and Discernment in Livelihood (आपद्धर्मे विज्ञानबलम्)

षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि सो5तप्यद्‌ गौतमस्तप: । तमुग्रतपसा युक्त भावितं सुमहामुनिम्‌,गौतमने उस आश्रममें साठ हजार वर्षोतक तपस्या की। नरश्रेष्ठ। एक दिन उग्र तपस्यामें लगे हुए पवित्र महात्मा महामुनि गौतमके पास लोकपाल यम स्वयं आये। उन्होंने वहाँ आकर उत्तम तपस्वी गौतम ऋषिको देखा

ṣaṣṭiṁ varṣa-sahasrāṇi so 'tapyad gautamas tapaḥ | tam ugra-tapasā yuktaṁ bhāvitaṁ su-mahā-munim |

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഗൗതമൻ ആ ആശ്രമത്തിൽ അറുപതിനായിരം വർഷം തപസ്സു ചെയ്തു. ഉഗ്രതപസ്സാൽ ശുദ്ധിയും പരിപാകവും നേടിയ ആ മഹർഷി മഹാമുനിയെ ദർശിക്കുവാൻ ധർമ്മപാലകൻ യമൻ സ്വയം അവിടെ എത്തി.
