भीष्मजीने कहा--दूसरोंको मान देनेवाले महाराज! भरतनन्दन! पहले इन्द्रप्रस्थमें (राजसूययज्ञके समय) भाइयोंसहित तुम्हारी वैसी अदभुत श्री-सम्पत्ति, वह परम उत्तम सभा और समृद्धि देखकर संतप्त हुए दुर्योधनने कौरवसभामें बैठकर पिता धृतराष्ट्रसे अपनी गहरी चिन्ता प्रकट की--सारी मनोव्यथा कह सुनायी। उसने सभामें जो बातें कही थीं, वह सब सुनो ।। श्र॒ुत्वा हि धृतराष्ट्रश्न दुर्योधनवचस्तदा । अब्रवीत् कर्णसहितं दुर्योधनमिदं वच:,उस समय धृतराष्ट्रने दुर्योधनकी बात सुनकर कर्णसहित उससे इस प्रकार कहा
bhīṣma uvāca—parān mānayitā rājan bharatanandana! pūrvam indraprasthe rājasūyayajñasamaye bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ tava tādṛśīm adbhutāṃ śrī-sampattiṃ, sā parama-uttamā sabhāṃ ca samṛddhiṃ ca dṛṣṭvā santapto duryodhanaḥ kaurava-sabhāyāṃ niṣaṇṇaḥ pituḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gāḍhāṃ cintāṃ prakaṭayām āsa—sarvāṃ manovyathāṃ kathayām āsa. sabhāyāṃ sa yad avadat tat sarvaṃ śṛṇu. śrutvā hi dhṛtarāṣṭro duryodhana-vacas tadā, abravīt karṇa-sahitaṃ duryodhanam idaṃ vacaḥ.
ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—മറ്റുള്ളവരെ ആദരിക്കുന്ന മഹാരാജാവേ, ഭരതവംശത്തിന്റെ ആനന്ദമേ! മുമ്പ് രാജസൂയയാഗസമയത്ത് ഇന്ദ്രപ്രസ്ഥത്തിൽ സഹോദരന്മാരോടൊപ്പം നിന്റെ അത്ഭുതകരമായ രാജശ്രീയും, പരമോത്തമമായ സഭാമന്ദിരവും, സമൃദ്ധിയും കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ദുര്യോധനൻ ഉള്ളിൽ കത്തിപ്പൊള്ളുകയായിരുന്നു. കുരുസഭയിൽ ഇരുന്ന് അവൻ പിതാവായ ധൃതരാഷ്ട്രനോട് തന്റെ ഗാഢമായ ആശങ്ക വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി, മനസ്സിലെ മുഴുവൻ വേദനയും തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. സഭയിൽ അവൻ പറഞ്ഞതെല്ലാം കേൾക്കുക. അപ്പോൾ ധൃതരാഷ്ട്രൻ ദുര്യോധനന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ കേട്ട്, കർണനോടുകൂടി ദുര്യോധനനോട് ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞു.
