शंकितस्त्वमहं भीत: परच्छिद्रानुदर्शिन: । अस्निग्धाश्वैव दुस्तोषा: कर्म चैतद् बहुच्छलम्,“आप मुझपर संदेह करेंगे और मैं आपसे डरता रहूँगा, इधर पराये दोष दूँढनेवाले आपके भूत्यलोग मौजूद ही हैं। इनका मुझपर तनिक भी स्नेह नहीं है तथा इन्हें संतुष्ट रखना भी मेरे लिये अत्यन्त कठिन है। साथ ही यह मन्त्रीका कर्म भी अनेक प्रकारके छल- कपटसे भरा हुआ है
śaṅkitas tv ahaṃ bhītaḥ paracchidra-anudarśinaḥ | asnigdhāś caiva duṣṭoṣāḥ karma caitad bahu-chalam ||
ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു— നിങ്ങൾ എന്നെ സംശയിക്കുമോ എന്ന ആശങ്കയും ഭയവും എനിക്കുണ്ട്. അതുപോലെ നിങ്ങളുടെ പരിചാരകർ എപ്പോഴും മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ കുറ്റങ്ങൾ തേടുന്നവരാണ്; എനിക്കു നേരെ അവർക്കു സ്നേഹം ഇല്ല, അവരെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്തുക എനിക്ക് അത്യന്തം ദുഷ്കരം. കൂടാതെ മന്ത്രിയുടെ ഈ പ്രവർത്തിയും പലവിധ കപടതന്ത്രങ്ങളാൽ നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്.
