Duryodhana-śibira-praveśaḥ — The Pāṇḍavas Enter the Kaurava Camp; The Burning of Arjuna’s Chariot

sa cānena nṛśaṃsena dhṛṣṭadyumnena vīryavān

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a moral tension central to the Mahābhārata: even when valor is present, warfare can normalize ruthlessness (nṛśaṃsatā), raising questions about the limits of righteous conduct (dharma) under extreme conflict.

Sañjaya reports that a mighty warrior (vīryavān) is being confronted/attacked by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, who is characterized as nṛśaṃsa—ruthless—signaling the severity and uncompromising nature of the ongoing battle.
