व्रतैश्न नियमैश्वनैव काले काले सम भुज्जते | वे सब-के-सब अन्न छोड़कर व्रत और नियमोंका पालन करते हुए समय-समयपर उस वृक्षका ही फल खाया करते थे
vrataiś ca niyamaiś caiva kāle kāle sama-bhuñjate
അവർ എല്ലാ അന്നവും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് വ്രതവും നിയമവും അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു; യഥാസമയങ്ങളിൽ മിതമായി ഭുഞ്ജിച്ചു; തങ്ങളുടെ തപോനിയമപ്രകാരം ആ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ ഫലം മാത്രമേ ആഹാരമായി സ്വീകരിച്ചിരുന്നുള്ളൂ.
