Adhyāya 21 — Duryodhanasya bāṇavarṣaḥ
Duryodhana’s Arrow-Storm and the Dust-Obscured Engagements
वहाँ कृतवर्माका शत्रुओंके साथ होनेवाला युद्ध अत्यन्त आश्चर्यजनक प्रतीत होता था; क्योंकि उसने अकेले ही दुर्जय पाण्डव-सेनाकी प्रगति रोक दी थी ।।
sañjaya uvāca | teṣām anyonya-suhṛdāṃ kṛte karmaṇi duṣkare | siṃhanādaḥ prahṛṣṭānāṃ divi spṛk sumahān abhūt ||
സഞ്ജയൻ പറഞ്ഞു—പരസ്പരം ക്ഷേമം ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കൗരവർക്കുവേണ്ടി കൃതവർമ്മൻ ആ അത്യന്തം ദുഷ്കരമായ കർമ്മം നിർവഹിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ആഹ്ലാദിതരായ യോദ്ധാക്കൾ ഉയർത്തിയ മഹാസിംഹനാദം ആകാശത്തെത്തിയതുപോലെ തോന്നി. യുദ്ധധർമ്മത്തിന്റെ കഠിന ന്യായത്തിൽ അവന്റെ ഏകാന്ത പ്രതിരോധം—ദുര്ജയമായ പാണ്ഡവസേനയുടെ മുന്നേറ്റം തടഞ്ഞുനിർത്തിയത്—സഹയോദ്ധാക്കളുടെ സൗഹൃദവും ധൈര്യനിശ്ചയവും ഉണർത്തുന്ന കേന്ദ്രമായി; അതോടൊപ്പം ആ ദിവസത്തെ ക്രൂരതയും കൂടുതൽ കനന്നു।
