Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how, in war, courage and steadiness can collapse under overwhelming force; even strong leadership and restraint (Bhīma’s effort) may not suffice when collective morale breaks. It implicitly contrasts the ideal of standing firm in kṣatriya-dharma with the human reality of fear and disarray.

During the battle, the Pāṇḍava fighters are being heavily struck by the Kauravas and fail to maintain their position. Bhīma attempts to stop them from giving way, but they still cannot remain, all while Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna witness the scene.
