Educational Q&A

A single dharmic act—rescuing someone in peril—can generate far-reaching consequences. Compassion and protection create bonds of reciprocity (Maya repays Arjuna by building the hall), yet the resulting prosperity can also become fuel for envy and ethical downfall if met with pride and rivalry.

Duryodhana recalls that Arjuna saved Maya the Dānava from a great fire. In gratitude and service, Maya then constructed the extraordinary assembly hall for the Pāṇḍavas—an event that later intensifies Duryodhana’s jealousy and drives key conflicts in the Sabha Parva.
