अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः
संजय! मेरी इस सेनाका उत्कर्ष अथवा उत्साह नष्ट हो गया है। इसके प्रमुख वीर कर्णके मारे जानेपर अब यह बच सकेगी, ऐसा मुझे नहीं दिखायी देता है ।।
sañjaya! meyā asyāḥ senāyā utkarṣaḥ athavā utsāho naṣṭo gataḥ. asyāḥ pradhāna-vīrasya karṇasya māraṇe sati idānīm eṣā rakṣituṃ śakṣyati iti me na pratibhāti. tau hi vīrau maheṣvāsau mad-arthe tyakta-jīvitau—bhīṣma-droṇau hatāv iti śrutvā ko ’narthaḥ jīvitena me?
സഞ്ജയാ! എന്റെ ഈ സൈന്യത്തിന്റെ ഉത്കർഷം—അഥവാ അതിന്റെ ഉത്സാഹം—നശിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ പ്രധാനവീരനായ കര്ണന് വധിക്കപ്പെട്ടതോടെ ഇനി ഇത് എങ്ങനെ നിലനില്ക്കും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് കാണുന്നില്ല. എന്റെ നിമിത്തം ജീവമോഹം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച ആ രണ്ടു മഹാധനുര്ധരന്മാര്—ഭീഷ്മനും ദ്രോണനും—ഹതരായെന്ന് കേട്ടാല്, എന്റെ ജീവിച്ചിരിപ്പിന് എന്ത് പ്രയോജനം?
