Karṇa’s Pressure on the Pāñcālas; Duryodhana Disabled; Arjuna’s Counter-Advance
nāham ātmani kiñcid vai kilbiṣaṃ karṇa saṃsmare | yena māṃ tvaṃ mahābāho hantum icchasy anāgasam ||
The verse foregrounds ethical accountability: before violence is justified, one must identify a real offense. Claiming innocence (anāgasatva) challenges the moral grounds of hostility and highlights the dharmic demand for reasoned, just cause rather than mere enmity.
In the Karṇa Parva battle context, Sañjaya reports a direct address to Karṇa: the speaker protests that he remembers no wrongdoing in himself that would warrant Karṇa’s desire to kill him, framing the impending act as morally questionable if done against one who is guiltless.
