Adhyāya 69: Strategic duels under Bhīṣma’s command
Virāṭa–Bhīṣma; Arjuna–Aśvatthāmā; Bhīma–Duryodhana; Abhimanyu–Lakṣmaṇa
tato devarṣi-gandharvā vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ | kautūhala-parāḥ sarve pitāmaham athābruvan |
The verse highlights a dharmic posture toward the extraordinary: when confronted with events that surpass ordinary understanding, even exalted beings respond with humility, wonder, and a desire to seek clarification from a higher source of wisdom and authority (Brahmā).
After witnessing something remarkable, the Devarṣis and Gandharvas become intensely astonished and, driven by curiosity, turn to Pitāmaha Brahmā and begin to question or address him, preparing the ground for an explanatory discourse.
