Daiva–Puruṣakāra Discourse and the Elephant-Corps Engagement (भीमगजानीक-सम्भ्रान्ति)
ततः शक्तिगदाखड््गतोमरष्टथिपरश्वधै: । कलिज्जश्न॒ ततो राजन् भीमसेनमवाकिरन्,राजन्! उस समय कलिंग-योद्धा भीमसेनपर शक्ति, गदा, खड़्ग, तोमर, ऋष्टि तथा फरसोंकी वर्षा करने लगे
tataḥ śakti-gadā-khaḍga-tomara-ṛṣṭhi-paraśvadhaiḥ | kaliṅgāś ca tato rājan bhīmasenam avākiran ||
രാജാവേ! അപ്പോൾ കലിംഗയോദ്ധാക്കൾ ശക്തി, ഗദ, ഖഡ്ഗം, തോമരം, ഋഷ്ടി, പരശു എന്നിവകൊണ്ട് ഭീമസേനന്റെ മേൽ ആയുധവൃഷ്ടി ചൊരിഞ്ഞു।
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the harsh reality of kṣatriya warfare: steadfastness and courage are demanded when one is overwhelmed by force. Ethically, it frames the battlefield as a domain where duty and endurance are tested amid intense violence, without celebrating cruelty for its own sake.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Kalinga fighters collectively attack Bhīma, pelting him with multiple kinds of weapons in a concentrated assault.
