उत्पातवर्णनम् (Utpāta-varṇanam) — Catalogue of Portents
वामार्चिर्दष्टगन्धश्न॒ मुज्चन् वै दारुणं स्वनम् । स्पर्शा गन्धा रसाश्चैव विपरीता महीपते
vāmārcir dṛṣṭa-gandhaś ca muñcan vai dāruṇaṁ svanam | sparśā gandhā rasāś caiva viparītā mahīpate ||
വ്യാസൻ പറഞ്ഞു—രാജാവേ! ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെ ആഹുതികളാൽ ജ്വലിച്ച യജ്ഞാഗ്നിയും അശുഭലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ കാണിക്കുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ജ്വാലകൾ വാമാവർത്തമായി വളഞ്ഞുയരുന്നു; ദുർഗന്ധം പുറപ്പെടുന്നു; ഭയാനകമായ സ്വരം ഉയരുന്നു. സ്പർശം, ഗന്ധം, രുചി—എല്ലാം വിപരീതമായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ദ്രിയധർമ്മത്തിലെ ഈ വിപര്യാസം ധർമ്മക്ഷോഭത്തിന്റെയും വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന യുദ്ധത്തിലെ മഹാവിപത്തിന്റെയും മുൻസൂചനയാണ്.
