गात्राणि गात्रैरस्याहं सम्प्रवेक्ष्ये हि रक्षितुम्‌ यद्युच्छिष्टामिमां पत्नीमद्य पश्यति मे गुरु:

gātrāṇi gātrair asyāhaṃ sampravekṣye hi rakṣitum | yady ucchiṣṭām imāṃ patnīm adya paśyati me guruḥ ||

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—അവളെ കാക്കാൻ അവന്റെ അവയവങ്ങൾക്ക് എതിരായി എന്റെ അവയവങ്ങളെയേ ഞാൻ തടസ്സമായി നിർത്തും. കാരണം ഇന്ന് എന്റെ ഗുരു ഈ ഭാര്യയെ ‘ഉച്ഛിഷ്ട’—അപമാനിതയും ഉപേക്ഷിതയും—ആയി കണ്ടാൽ, ആ കളങ്കം ഞാൻ എങ്ങനെ സഹിക്കും?
