Discerning Dharma in Accord with Time

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches restraint and integrity: one should not covet or approach another’s wife, but relate with respectful boundaries (as to mother/sister/daughter), avoid theft, and cultivate contentment with one’s own lawful wealth—conduct that is said to lead to heavenly merit.

In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction-focused setting, Śrīmaheśvara speaks a dharma teaching, listing virtues and restraints (sexual propriety, non-stealing, and contentment) and linking them to auspicious posthumous results (attaining svarga).
