Educational Q&A

Improper acceptance of certain gifts (meat, honey, salt) is treated as a ritual fault for a brāhmaṇa, and it should be remedied immediately through a simple, disciplined expiation—standing in observance until sunrise—so that purity and eligibility for dharmic duties are restored.

In Bhīṣma’s instruction on dharma (Anuśāsana Parva), he lists a specific case of ritual lapse connected with receiving certain substances and prescribes a concrete prāyaścitta: remaining standing until sunrise to regain purity.
