धनबुद्धिश्रुतैहीन: केवल तेजसान्वित: । महत प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिण: कृश:,अथवा यह भी हो सकता है कि तुम धन, बुद्धि और विद्यासे हीन होकर भी केवल शारीरिक शक्तिसे सम्पन्न होकर ऊँचा पद चाहते रहे हो और इसमें तुम्हें सफलता न मिली हो; इसीलिये तुम पाण्डुवर्णके हो गये हो और तुम्हारा शरीर भी सूखता जा रहा है
dhanabuddhiśrutaihīnaḥ kevala-tejasānvitaḥ | mahat prārthayase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ||
ധനം, ബുദ്ധി, വിദ്യ എന്നിവ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്നിട്ടും വെറും ദേഹതേജസ്സോടെ നീ നിശ്ചയമായും മഹത്തായ പദവി ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. അത് ലഭിക്കാതിരുന്നതിനാൽ നീ പാണ്ഡുവർണ്ണനായി, ശരീരവും ക്ഷയിക്കുന്നു.
