Educational Q&A

Bhishma teaches that sustained renunciation of sensory indulgences—especially luxury adornments and certain foods like honey and meat—constitutes a meritorious discipline that leads to exalted heavenly attainments (Maruts’ realm and Indra’s heaven).

In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma is instructing Yudhishthira on dharma and the fruits of vows and restraints. Here he states the specific reward for a person who practices permanent abstention from garlands/sandal and from honey and meat.
