Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity

sukheṣv abhirato bhogī duḥkhānām avijānakaḥ | divyamālāṃ divyavastraṃ divyagandhaṃ ca divyānulepanaṃ dhārayitvā sa bhogaśakti-sādhana-sampannaḥ sukha-bhogeṣv eva rataḥ | duḥkhāni tasya kadācana na anubhavanti |

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that immersion in pleasure, supported by abundant resources and luxury, can make a person insensitive to suffering. Ethically, it warns that comfort may conceal the realities that cultivate restraint, compassion, and dharmic discernment.

In Bhishma’s instruction within the Anushasana Parva, he describes a figure who lives surrounded by divine-like luxuries—garlands, clothes, perfumes, and ointments—and therefore remains fixed on enjoyment, never directly encountering pain. The description functions as a moral illustration within his broader dharma teaching.
