Timing: Immediately after preparing the two caru offerings

FAQs

This verse prescribes a specific first offering to Pṛthivī, acknowledging Earth as the support of the body and the ritual ground, and ritually aligning the rite with cosmic order before proceeding to Yama-related offerings.

By making the second offering to Yama, the rite formally recognizes Yama as the authority over the post-death path and judgment, situating the deceased’s transition within Yama’s governance described throughout the Preta Kanda.

Even when simplified, maintaining the intended sequence—reverence to Earth first, then remembrance of Yama—helps preserve the ritual logic of humility, order, and accountability central to Garuda Purana funeral observances.
