The Narrative of the Five Pretas
Eligibility for rites and jīvac-chrāddha procedure
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच / अधिकारो यदा नास्ति यदि नास्ति च निश्चयः / जीविते सति जीवाय दद्याच्छ्राद्धंस्वयं नरः
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca / adhikāro yadā nāsti yadi nāsti ca niścayaḥ / jīvite sati jīvāya dadyācchrāddhaṃsvayaṃ naraḥ
Śrī Kṛṣṇa (as the instructing divine speaker in the Garuda Purana dialogue tradition)
Timing: While alive (jīvite sati), when no eligible performer and no certainty exist
Concept: In absence of an eligible performer and certainty, one should offer śrāddha oneself while alive (jīvite sati) for one’s own benefit—an authorized contingency practice.
Vedantic Theme: Kartṛtva-bhāva disciplined by śāstra: even when external agents are unavailable, dharma can be upheld through self-initiated, sanctioned action; also hints at the impermanence of life and urgency of right action now.
Application: If family structure or eligibility is lacking, arrange and perform sanctioned memorial/ancestral offerings (or their approved substitutes) during one’s lifetime with proper guidance and purity.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.8.11 (preparatory purity and Viṣṇu worship as core)
This verse prioritizes continuity of dharmic rites: if no eligible person can perform śrāddha (or there is doubt), the individual should arrange it themselves while alive so the intended spiritual support is not missed.
By emphasizing śrāddha even amid uncertainty, it implies that ritual support is considered consequential for the being’s welfare, and that ensuring the rite is performed safeguards one’s post-death journey from avoidable obstacles.
If family availability, eligibility, or intention is uncertain, one can responsibly plan and fund proper śrāddha arrangements in advance through trustworthy priests/organizations, ensuring rites are performed according to one’s tradition.
