Mukti-tattva Upadeśa: Knowledge as the Direct Cause of Liberation
nāmamātreṇa santuṣṭāḥ karmakāṇḍaratā narāḥ / mantroccāraṇahomādyairbhrāmitāḥ kratuvistaraiḥ
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Mere nomenclature and outward ritual acts (mantra, homa, kratu-vistara) do not yield the intended spiritual end when pursued as ends in themselves.
Vedantic Theme: Karma-kāṇḍa is subordinate to knowledge; external action without viveka becomes māyā-driven distraction from Brahma-jñāna/bhakti.
Application: Use ritual as a support (sādhana) rather than identity; prioritize self-inquiry, ethical purification, and devotion over performative religiosity.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.49.61-64 (continuation: critique of austerity-for-show and hypocrisy)
This verse cautions that ritual actions (karmakāṇḍa) become spiritually unhelpful when one clings only to external performance and names, missing inner understanding and dharma.
In the Preta Kanda context, it implies that after-death welfare is not secured by elaborate rites alone; correct knowledge, intention, and righteous living are essential alongside prescribed rituals.
Perform rites with sincerity and ethical conduct, but do not reduce spirituality to showy ceremonies; prioritize truthfulness, compassion, and right understanding along with mantra and homa.
