Mukti-tattva Upadeśa: Knowledge as the Direct Cause of Liberation
lohadārumayaiḥ pāśaiḥ pumānbaddho vimucyate / puttradāramayaiḥ pāśairmucyate na kadācana
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: External bondage is easier to remove than inner bondage to spouse/children; attachment is the stronger fetter.
Vedantic Theme: Bandha is primarily mental (saṅkalpa/āsakti); liberation requires inner disidentification, not merely changing circumstances.
Application: Cultivate non-possessive love: serve family as dharma while practicing inner freedom (meditation, japa, self-inquiry); watch for identity fusion and dependency.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: repeated metaphors of pāśa (fetter) and bondage by attachment (theme-level parallel)
This verse states that physical bonds (like iron or wood) can be cut, but attachment to spouse and children becomes a subtler, stronger bondage that obstructs true release.
It implies that the soul’s post-death journey is hindered not merely by external constraints but by inner clinging—especially to family—creating a persistent ‘pāśa’ (noose) that keeps consciousness tied to worldly identity.
Fulfill duties to family while cultivating non-possessiveness—practice charity, remembrance of mortality, and spiritual discipline so relationships remain loving responsibilities, not binding attachments.
