Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Ātman (or one’s own self-effort grounded in inner reality) is the true friend; therefore pursue genuine self-benefit repeatedly and steadily.
Vedantic Theme: Ātma-sākṣitva and viveka; turning inward from external dependencies toward the enduring Self; groundwork for liberation-oriented life.
Application: Daily self-examination; choose actions aligned with long-term spiritual welfare (dharma, devotion, restraint, study).
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: repeated exhortations to self-effort (puruṣakāra) and dharma as one’s true support (thematic)
This verse stresses that the individual must rely on one’s own inner resolve and discernment; repeated reflection and steady practice of one’s true welfare (hita) is the foundation for spiritual safety and good destiny.
Preta Kanda repeatedly teaches that one’s post-death condition follows one’s own karma; by cultivating beneficial conduct while living, the jiva prepares for the after-death path and avoids regret in Yama’s domain.
Regularly review your actions, correct harmful habits, and commit to dharmic choices—because your most reliable support is your own cultivated character and disciplined mind.
