Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: True yoga-knowledge includes understanding the ten vital airs and the body’s material constituents; such knowledge supports non-identification with the body.
Vedantic Theme: Viveka between ātman and śarīra; prāṇa and dhātus are objects of knowledge, not the knower.
Application: In practice, observe breath and vital functions (prāṇa-vāyus) and contemplate the body as composite dhātus to reduce attachment and fear.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: inner body (prāṇa network and dhātu field)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.32.30 (nāḍīs/kośas/indriyas); Garuda Purana 2.32.32 (pañcabhūta basis of the piṇḍa)
This verse frames true yogic understanding as knowledge of the body’s functioning through the ten vital airs, emphasizing prana as the key principle that animates embodied life.
By distinguishing the living dynamics (pranas) from the body’s material constituents (marrow, bone, blood, etc.), it supports the Garuda Purana’s broader teaching that life and post-death transition involve more than the physical body alone.
Cultivate awareness of breath and vitality (prana) through disciplined living and practice, and reduce over-identification with the body by remembering it is a composite of changing elements.
