Post-cremation Ripening of Karma and the Principal Narakas
ete tārkṣya samākhyātā dehe tiṣṭhanti taskarāḥ / kāmaḥ krodho hyahaṅkāro manastatraiva nāyakaḥ
Lord Vishnu
Concept: Kāma, krodha, and ahaṅkāra are ‘thieves’ within; mind (manas) leads them—therefore mastery of mind is central to ethical and spiritual life.
Vedantic Theme: Antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi: purification of mind/ego as prerequisite for knowledge and devotion; bondage arises from identification with vṛttis.
Application: Treat impulses as intruders: name them, interrupt them, and redirect attention; adopt daily self-audit (svādhyāya) and restraint practices.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Type: inner psycho-ethical landscape
Related Themes: Garuda Purana ethical passages on inner enemies and sense-control; repeated warnings about kāma/krodha as causes of downfall
The verse frames these impulses as forces that steal discernment, merit, and peace, making the embodied person vulnerable to sin and bondage.
It points to the inner causes—mind-led desire, anger, and ego—that generate karma; such karma shapes suffering and experiences described in the Preta Kanda after death.
Treat the mind as the commander: restrain desire, cool anger, and reduce ego through self-observation, ethical discipline, and devotion, so actions do not create harmful karma.
