Sapindīkaraṇa: Timing, Eligibility, Gotra Rules, and Yearlong Śrāddha
with Vṛṣotsarga and Ghaṭa-dāna
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन स्वपतिं स्त्री निषेवते / मनसा कर्मणा वाचा मृतं जीवन्तमेव वा
tasmātsarvaprayatnena svapatiṃ strī niṣevate / manasā karmaṇā vācā mṛtaṃ jīvantameva vā
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Whole-person fidelity—by mind, speech, and action—toward one’s spouse is enjoined as dharma, extending even beyond death in intention and observance.
Vedantic Theme: Integration of antaḥkaraṇa and karma: inner resolve and outer conduct must be unified; dharma as purifier of mind (citta-śuddhi).
Application: Practice consistency across thought, speech, and behavior; honor commitments; maintain respectful remembrance and responsibilities even after a spouse’s death (where culturally relevant).
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Type: domestic/ethical setting
Related Themes: Garuda Purana, household dharma and consequences sections; triad of manas-vāk-kāya appears as a common ethical formula
This verse frames a wife’s dharma as wholehearted loyalty and service—internally (mind), verbally (speech), and externally (actions)—presented as a disciplined spiritual ethic, not merely social custom.
By stating “even if he is dead,” it implies continuity of duty and remembrance beyond death, aligning with the Preta Kanda’s focus on post-death responsibility, merit (puṇya), and proper conduct connected to the departed.
Practice integrity and care in relationships through thought, words, and actions—and after loss, uphold respectful remembrance and responsible duties rather than neglect or hostility.
