Afterlife Stage: Yamaloka Journey
Concept: The subtle person (aṅguṣṭhamātra puruṣa) departs the body; death is separation of subtle and gross sheaths, not annihilation.
Vedantic Theme: Sūkṣma-śarīra’s continuity; ātman/jīva distinct from deha; liberation lies in transcending identification with the perishable body.
Application: Contemplate the self beyond the body; practice nāma-smaraṇa so the departing mind clings to the divine rather than fear.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Type: liminal
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: explicit description of jīva leaving the body and beginning the post-mortem path; Garuda Purana: subsequent verses on the preta’s condition and Yamadūtas’ handling
It signifies the jīva’s subtle form at the moment of death—depicting the soul leaving the gross body and entering the post-death (preta) condition.
It describes the immediate transition: visible bodily signs appear (foam and saliva), then the subtle being departs the body in distress, marking the start of the after-death journey described later in the Preta Kanda.
It encourages awareness of life’s impermanence and motivates timely spiritual practice and proper death-related rites (e.g., śrāddha/pinda offerings) to aid the departed.
