This verse links correct post-death observances—performed continuously from the death-day up to the annual śrāddha—with the orderly onward journey of the departed, emphasizing adherence to the prescribed method (yathokta-vidhi).
It states that righteous, meritorious persons depart via an “upper opening,” indicating an auspicious upward course, while the family’s proper rites support the transition through the post-death period until the annual rite.
Live ethically to cultivate sukṛta (merit) and, when a death occurs, follow the traditional śrāddha/ritual timeline with care and correctness rather than treating rites as optional or purely symbolic.
