Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni

Concept: According to one’s state of existence, the same ‘support’ manifests as different sustenance—flesh for dānava, blood for preta; in human life as food/drink; in childhood as dominant bhoga-rasa (taste for enjoyment).

Vedantic Theme: Bondage through vāsanā (taste/craving) and embodiment-conditioned experience; saṃsāra’s variability driven by karmic conditioning.

FAQs

This verse highlights that the preta state is marked by distorted sustenance and craving—symbolizing unresolved karmic hunger—thereby underscoring the need for proper rites and righteous living to avoid such a condition.

It presents how embodiment changes the mode of ‘experience’ and ‘nourishment’ across states—demonic, preta, and human—implying that karmic disposition shapes the kind of body and its corresponding appetites.

Cultivate disciplined desires and ethical conduct, and when a death occurs in the family, perform appropriate śrāddha/pinda-related observances as prescribed in tradition to support a peaceful transition and reduce restless craving.
