Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Ritual Type: Parvana
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: From amāvasyā arrival until sunset (astamaya)
Concept: Unperformed śrāddha yields immediate subtle deprivation for Pitṛs; offerings function as karmic nourishment in the ancestral economy.
Vedantic Theme: Sūkṣma-śarīra and subtle experience: hunger/thirst can be experienced in non-gross modes; karma binds through relational obligations (ṛṇa) across lifetimes.
Application: Do not delay prescribed rites; if full śrāddha is impossible, offer at least tarpaṇa/anna-dāna with sankalpa for Pitṛs before sunset.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Type: threshold vicinity/liminal domestic space
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.10.53 (despair after sunset); Garuda Purana 2.10.54 (injunction to perform amāvasyā-śrāddha)
This verse states that the Pitṛs, existing in a subtle (air-like) state, actively yearn for śrāddha offerings, implying that the rite is a direct means of relieving their hunger-and-thirst condition and sustaining them.
It portrays the Pitṛs as vāyubhūta—subtle and unseen—yet still experiencing need (hunger and thirst), indicating a post-death state where ritual offerings can tangibly help them.
Perform śrāddha with care and timely completion before sunset, and treat ancestor rites as an ethical duty (dharma) of gratitude and support to one’s lineage.
