Haristuti-saṅgraha: Devatā–Ṛṣi Praṇāma, Nāma-māhātmya, and Vairāgya from Deha-āsakti

pravāhādviguṇonaścetyevaṃ jānīhi cāṇḍaja / sūryānantarajaḥ stotuṃ varuṇaḥ saṃpracakrame
Lord Vishnu (narrating/instructing Garuda)
Concept: Knowledge is sometimes conveyed as proportion/measure (pramāṇa) within cosmological exposition; then devotion (stuti) resumes through Varuṇa.
Vedantic Theme: Pramāṇa and order: the cosmos is intelligible through measure, yet the narrative returns to bhakti as the integrating response.
Application: Hold both modes: study (measured understanding) and devotion (praise). When a teaching is cryptic, keep it as a contemplative seed rather than forcing premature certainty.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: cosmological/metric statements interspersed with stutis; narrative handoffs between speakers
This verse signals a shift into a devotional or explanatory section where a deity (Varuṇa) begins a hymn or praise, highlighting the Purāṇic theme of cosmic hierarchy and reverence among Devas.
Vishnu addresses Garuḍa directly (“cāṇḍaja”), giving an instruction (“jānīhi”) and then narrating the next event—Varuṇa commencing praise—typical of the Purāṇic teacher-disciple storytelling flow.
It emphasizes disciplined understanding (“know it thus”) followed by reverent speech (“praise”), encouraging study with humility and devotion in one’s spiritual practice.
