On the Causes/Means of Knowledge
vedā hyete vedayantīti deva tathā purāṇaṃ bhārataṃ pañcarātram / kramādito vicintya sā viṣṇuguṇānsvayogyānsadā vijānāti ramāpi devī
Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Śāstra (Veda, Purāṇa, Itihāsa, Pañcarātra) reveals knowledge; Viṣṇu’s qualities are apprehended according to adhikāra (spiritual fitness) through ordered study (anukrama).
Vedantic Theme: Adhikāra-bheda and ananta-guṇatva of Bhagavān; śruti-smṛti as pramāṇa; gradual illumination through śāstra-vicāra.
Application: Study foundational texts in a disciplined sequence with humility; accept graded comprehension; use Pañcarātra and Purāṇa alongside śruti to cultivate Viṣṇu-bhakti and right understanding.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana (general): emphasis on Viṣṇu-bhakti as liberative means; śāstra-pramāṇa in mokṣa sections
This verse treats them as complementary sources of revealed knowledge that “make known” truth, guiding a seeker—step by step—toward understanding Viṣṇu’s attributes.
It emphasizes krama (sequence) and āditaḥ (from the beginning): one should reflect systematically, and realization arises according to one’s sva-yogyatā—personal eligibility and preparedness.
Study core teachings in a structured order, seek clarity rather than speed, and align practice with your level—consistent reflection and devotion deepen understanding of divine qualities.
