Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni
Ritual Type: Sapindana
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: during sapiṇḍīkaraṇa sequence at the arghya-transfer step
Concept: Ritual transfer (saṅkramaṇa) and mantra-recitation (‘ye samānā…’) operationalize the movement from preta-related offering to pitṛ-related offering.
Vedantic Theme: Ritual as symbolic transformation: outer transfer mirrors inner acceptance of impermanence and continuity of lineage (saṃtāna).
Application: When conducting memorial rites, follow the prescribed sequence and mantras; treat transitional steps with special care, as they carry the rite’s intended ‘status-change’ meaning.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Type: ritual precinct (altar/vedi space)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.99: earlier ‘pūrvavat’ steps and mantra sets for arghya/tilodaka; References to ‘ye samānā…’ mantras within the same śrāddha sequence
This verse treats arghya as a formal, sanctifying offering that links the preta-offering with the Pitṛs’ vessels, ensuring the rite is properly directed and ritually complete.
By distinguishing the preta state from the Pitṛ realm in ritual handling (separate vessels, then a deliberate transfer), the verse reflects the transitional status of the departed and the role of prescribed rites in supporting that transition.
If performing śrāddha or tarpaṇa, follow the procedure with accuracy—use dedicated offerings, recite the indicated mantras, and complete the remaining steps “as prescribed,” ideally under guidance of a qualified priest or tradition.
