Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Tithi governance: 7th by Moon’s son (Budha), 8th by Mars and Sun, 9th by Moon and/or Venus, 10th auspicious under Jupiter.
Vedantic Theme: Sattvic alignment through ordered action; time as a dharmic instrument rather than mere chronology.
Application: Select the 10th tithi for auspicious undertakings; treat 8th/9th as potentially mixed due to malefic/variable influences; consult local pañcāṅga interpretation.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: celestial time-map (tithi-graha schema)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.59.25 (9th noted among aśubha list); Garuda Purana 1.59.26-27 (preceding tithi-graha mapping); Garuda Purana 1.59.29 (continuation)
This verse assigns planetary presiding influences to specific tithis (7th–10th), guiding practitioners in choosing auspicious timing for dharmic rites.
Indirectly: by emphasizing correct ritual timing (tithi/planet), it supports orderly performance of rites that the Garuda Purana links with dharma and post-death welfare.
When planning a religious observance, consult the tithi and its presiding planetary influence—especially noting the tenth tithi as auspicious under Jupiter per this verse.
