Gāruḍa-Māhātmya and Tārkṣya-Stotra: Fruits of Hearing/Reciting and the Power of Garuḍa’s Praise
yadabravītpurā vyāsaḥ sāraṃ māṃ gāruḍeritam / vyāsaḥ śrutvā brahmaṇaśca purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ śubham / devaṃ dhyāyanvedamekaṃ caturdhā vyabhajaddhariḥ
Narrator/Compiler voice within the Garuda Purana tradition (attributing authority to Vyasa and Brahma)
Concept: Scriptural organization is a divine act mediated through Vyāsa: hearing sacred teaching, meditating on God, and then structuring revelation for the world (Veda into four).
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara as the ultimate source of śāstra; human sages as instruments (nimitta) in preserving dharma and enabling mokṣa.
Application: Approach study as sādhana: listen, contemplate, then systematize learning for clarity; support preservation and responsible teaching of sacred knowledge.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: āśrama/inner vision (implied)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.240.3-6 (paramparā and phala)
It grounds the Garuḍa Purāṇa in a revered lineage: Brahmā as the source heard by Vyāsa, and Vyāsa as the transmitter who presents its “essence,” reinforcing its scriptural credibility.
The verse links Vyāsa with the traditional account of organizing the single Veda into four divisions, framed as an act done while meditating on the Divine (Hari).
Approach Garuḍa Purāṇa teachings with śraddhā (reverent attention) and study them in a disciplined way, remembering that spiritual knowledge is traditionally received through lineage, contemplation, and careful organization.
