manobuddhirahaṅkāramavyaktaṃ puruṣaṃ tathā / prasaṃkhyāya paraṃvyāpto vimukto bandhavairbhavet
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)
Concept: Tattva-viveka of antahkarana (manas-buddhi-ahamkara), avyakta (prakriti) and purusha leading to Brahma-vyapti and moksha.
Vedantic Theme: Discrimination of kshetra/kshetrajna and ascent from prakriti to purusha to the Supreme; bondage ends with identification in Brahman.
Application: Daily contemplation: observe mind/intellect/ego as objects; meditate on the witnessing Self; cultivate non-identification and rest in the all-pervading Supreme.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.237.9-12 (progressive laya/nyasa of tattvas; aham brahma; jnana-yajna superiority)
This verse presents liberation as arising from precise discrimination of mind, intellect, ego, prakṛti (the unmanifest), and puruṣa, culminating in establishment in the Supreme.
It indicates that bondage is sustained by misidentification with inner instruments (mind/intellect/ego); when these are analyzed and distinguished from puruṣa and then rooted in the Supreme, the soul becomes free.
Practice daily self-inquiry: notice thoughts (manas), judgments (buddhi), and ‘I’-claims (ahaṅkāra) as objects of awareness, cultivating detachment and steadiness in the higher Self.
