Śravaṇa-Dvādaśī Vrata (Vijayā/Mahātī Dvādaśī): Vāmana-Kumbha Worship, Restraints, and Jāgaraṇa
विजया सा तिथिः प्रोक्ता हरिपूजादि चाक्षयम् / एक भक्तेन नक्तेन तथैवायाचितेन च
vijayā sā tithiḥ proktā haripūjādi cākṣayam / eka bhaktena naktena tathaivāyācitena ca
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda / Vinata-putra)
Concept: Akṣaya-phala arises from Hari-pūjā when joined with niyama: ekabhakta (single devoted practitioner), night-fast, and non-solicited offerings (ayācita).
Vedantic Theme: Purity of intention and means (śuddha-saṅkalpa, śuddha-ājīva) strengthens bhakti and reduces rāga-dveṣa, aiding inner freedom.
Application: Keep a night-fast (naktabhojana/one meal at night as prescribed), avoid pressuring others for donations, and perform simple Hari worship with sincerity and self-restraint.
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: ritual-time (tithi)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.136 (conditions of Śravaṇa-dvādaśī; akṣaya-phala theme continues)
This verse states that Vijayā tithi makes Hari-worship and related rites ‘akṣaya’—their spiritual merit becomes inexhaustible when done with proper restraint and devotion.
Indirectly, it emphasizes accumulating enduring merit (puṇya) through disciplined devotion—merit that supports the soul’s auspicious progress and protection in post-death transitions described elsewhere in the Garuda Purana.
Observe a simple night-fast (naktavrata), perform sincere Vishnu worship personally, and keep giving and ritual spending free from solicitation—prioritizing purity of intention and self-restraint.
