Prelude to Vāmana’s Petition
ब्रूहि कारणमेतस्य दुर्धर्षत्वस्य मद्रिपो: । ओज: सहो बलं तेजो यत एतत्समुद्यम: ॥ २७ ॥
brūhi kāraṇam etasya durdharṣatvasya mad-ripoḥ ojaḥ saho balaṁ tejo yata etat samudyamaḥ
ദയവായി പറയുക—എന്റെ ശത്രുവായ ബലി മഹാരാജന്റെ ഈ ദുര്ധർഷതയ്ക്ക് കാരണം എന്ത്? അവന്റെ ഓജസ്, സഹസ്സ്, ബലം, തേജസ്, ഈ വിജയോത്സാഹം—ഇവ എല്ലാം എവിടെ നിന്നാണ്?
This verse shows Indra questioning the underlying cause behind an opponent’s sudden “durdharṣatva” (unconquerability), implying that extraordinary power arises from a specific source—such as boons, austerity, or higher backing—rather than mere physical ability.
In the midst of the devas’ conflict with the asuras, Indra observes his enemy’s unusual prowess and asks for the reason behind it, seeking strategic and spiritual clarity about the source of that power.
Before reacting to someone’s influence or “power,” inquire into its real source—training, support systems, discipline, or values—and respond with discernment rather than fear or speculation.
