This verse models the Shaiva path of śravaṇa (reverent listening): knowledge of Shiva is received by approaching a compassionate, realized teacher with humility, devotion, and readiness for instruction.
Before teachings on Shiva’s Saguna forms (including Linga worship) are given, the Purana establishes the proper adhikāra (inner qualification): respectful invocation of the guru/narrator who transmits the tradition.
The implied practice is Purāṇa-śravaṇa and guru-vandana—begin recitation or listening with salutations, a prayer for grace (kṛpā), and a focused mind; then proceed to mantra-japa such as the Panchākṣarī as taught in the text.
