Viṣṇu’s cosmic stride (trivikrama) as the paradigm of world-order and protection, adapted to Sāman praise within Soma worship
Viṣṇu
Expansive majestic and stabilizing—suited to cosmic imagery and protective prayer
The dashati draws on RV-tradition material with mixed/unspecified seer attributions in the supplied data; where Dīrghatamas is cited it reflects an Aṅgiras-linked poetic current often used for cosmic-order themes.
Applied to Soma offerings and invitations to Soma-drinking (somapītaye) aligning cosmic praise with the act of pressing/serving Soma.
Mantra 1
Thou, verily, art pre-eminently renowned, the god most powerful; no other than thee, O Maghavan, is the cherisher of the mortal: O Indra, I utter to thee this hymn.
Mantra 2
Let not thy bounties, let not thy succours, O Vasu, ever fail us; do thou apportion unto us all riches, (fit) for men, and bring them hither to the tribes.
Mantra 3
Vāyu and Indra, lords of strength, with vigorous power, come together in one chariot; like aids (to the worshipper), possessed of yoked steeds, come to the drinking of Soma.
Mantra 4
That supreme station of Viṣṇu the wise ever behold, as an eye extended in heaven (beholds afar),—that (station) spread abroad (for contemplation).
Mantra 5
That (station) the inspired, praise-delighting, vigilant priests kindle forth (into manifestation by hymn),—that which is the supreme station of Viṣṇu.
Mantra 6
Therefore may the gods protect us, from that (mighty act) whereby Viṣṇu strode forth upon the summit of the earth.
It centers on Viṣṇu’s famous ‘three strides’—a cosmic act that establishes the worlds and order—and turns that remembrance into a prayer for protection and ritual success.
Sāman collections often combine related stotra materials: alongside Viṣṇu’s cosmic foundation, Indra–Vāyu are invited as powerful, swift helpers to come together for the Soma-drinking, strengthening the sacrifice.
Traditional explanation takes it as a step that is not easily perceived (gūḍha/samūḍha): Viṣṇu’s presence pervades even subtle or concealed regions, indicating divine reach beyond what is obvious.
