Agni-hymn, discovery of Indra, and the Nahuṣa threat
सम्प्राप्तुवन्त्वद्य सहैव दैवतै रिपुं जयाम तं॑ नहुषं घोरदृष्टिम् । तत: शक्रं ज्वलनो>प्याह भागं प्रयच्छ महां तव साहां करिष्ये । तमाह शक्रो भविताग्ने तवापि चेन्द्राग्न्योर्वैं भाग एको महाक्रतौ
samprāptuvantv adya sahaiva daivataiḥ ripuṃ jayāma taṃ nahuṣaṃ ghoradṛṣṭim | tataḥ śakraṃ jvalano ’py āha bhāgaṃ prayaccha mahāṃs tava sāhāṃ kariṣye | tam āha śakro bhavitāgne tavāpi cendrāgnyor vaiṃ bhāga eko mahākratau ||
“ມື້ນີ້ ຂໍໃຫ້ພວກເຮົາອອກໄປພ້ອມກັບເທວະດາ ແລະຊະນະສັດຕູນັ້ນ—ນະຫຸສ ຜູ້ມີສາຍຕານ່າຢ້ານ.” ແລ້ວແມ່ນແຕ່ອັກນິ (ເທວະໄຟ) ກໍກ່າວຕໍ່ພຣະສັກຣະ (ພຣະອິນທຣະ) ວ່າ: “ຂໍປະທານສ່ວນແບ່ງໃນພິທີຍັດໃຫ້ຂ້າພະເຈົ້າ; ຂ້າພະເຈົ້າຈະຊ່ວຍເຫຼືອທ່ານຢ່າງໃຫຍ່.” ພຣະສັກຣະຕອບວ່າ: “ໃຫ້ເປັນໄປຕາມນັ້ນ, ອັກນິ; ໃນມະຫາຍັດ ຈະມີສ່ວນຮ່ວມອັນດຽວສຳລັບອິນທຣະແລະອັກນິ—ໃນສ່ວນນັ້ນ ເຈົ້າກໍມີສິດອັນຄວນໄດ້.”
शल्य उवाच
Assistance and alliance—whether among humans or gods—should be grounded in dharmic reciprocity: service is acknowledged with a rightful share, and collective action against an oppressive foe is framed as proper when aligned with cosmic and ritual order.
The gods resolve to defeat the fearsome Nahuṣa. Agni offers help to Indra but asks for a sacrificial share; Indra agrees, declaring that in the great rite Indra and Agni will receive a single combined portion, ensuring Agni’s entitlement.
