हसितोत्क्ुष्टनिर्घोषं नानाज्ञानसुदुस्तरम् । रोदनाश्रुमलक्षारं संगत्यागपरायणम्
hasitotkuṣṭanirghoṣaṃ nānā-jñāna-sudustaram | rodanāśru-malakṣāraṃ saṅga-tyāga-parāyaṇam, śatru-sūdana |
Bhīṣma said: “O Slayer of foes, this world-ocean resounds with deep roaring made of laughter and loud cries; it is rendered exceedingly hard to cross by manifold forms of ignorance; its briny, sullied waters are the tears born of lamentation; and the supreme refuge—its further shore—is wholehearted dedication to the abandonment of attachments.”
