भीष्म उवाच
Attachment (āsakti), rooted in ignorance (ajñāna/avidyā), makes beings vulnerable to being ‘crushed’ by sense-pleasures; these pleasures perpetuate bondage and keep the world turning in the wheel of saṃsāra. The ethical thrust is to cultivate discernment and detachment so that one is not driven by ignorant enjoyment.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and liberation-oriented wisdom. Here he uses a vivid simile: just as oily sesame is pressed in an oil-mill, the world—because it clings and sticks—is pressed and overpowered by ignorance-born enjoyments, and thus continues to revolve in worldly existence.
