Educational Q&A

The verse catalogs the comforts and sensory attractions available in the gṛhastha-āśrama—luxury, entertainment, rich foods, and sexual pleasure—implicitly highlighting why discipline and dharma are necessary: these legitimate enjoyments can also become sources of attachment if pursued without restraint.

In Śānti Parva’s discourse on conduct and life-stages, Bharadvāja is describing the householder’s mode of life, emphasizing the readily available pleasures and amenities that characterize domestic prosperity.
