The verse frames an ethical-historical inquiry: after a decisive fall of a great warrior (Karṇa), attention turns to the conduct of the surviving forces. It highlights how outcomes in war immediately test resolve, leadership, and adherence to kṣatriya-dharma amid collapse and fear.
In the frame dialogue, King Janamejaya asks the Brahmin narrator what the remaining Kaurava troops did after Arjuna (Savyasācin) felled Karṇa in battle, setting up the Shalya Parva’s account of the war’s final phase.
