The verse highlights the warrior ethic of steadfast resolve: after declaring his intent, a hero advances without wavering. The lion-roar symbolizes inner fearlessness and the public assumption of responsibility in a righteous contest, where courage must be matched with disciplined purpose.
Sañjaya reports that Bhīma, having just spoken, moves forward to confront Karna (called Ādhirathi). As he advances, he lets out a powerful lion-like roar that makes the directions echo, signaling an open challenge and the escalation of the duel-like encounter.
