The verse frames a moral and narrative inquiry: when a warrior is slain under a particular ‘condition’ (avasthā), the listener’s attention turns to the ethical implications and the consequences that follow. It highlights how acts in war—especially controversial ones—reshape the flow of events and intensify questions of dharma.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks Sañjaya to describe how the fighting continued after Bhūriśravā, a Kuru warrior, was killed while in a certain state. The king seeks details of the renewed clash and its sequence, indicating that the manner of Bhūriśravā’s death has become a pivotal turning point in the battle’s progression.
